RAA Association (NSW) Inc. & Condon Associates Group
“Annual Golfers’ Challenge”
Early morning rain threatened the golf day until 11am when the clouds started to disperse into a perfect afternoon for golf. The course now brisling in virtually perfect condition. It was clearly the precursor to what was to be another wonderful day of golf and camaraderie. Our annual pilgrimage of ‘Gunner’ friendly golfers to compete for either the RAA Association Golf Challenge Shield, for the Defence related teams, or the Condon Associates Trophy for the non-military teams, was off to a near perfect start.
This year the event was held at Cumberland Country Golf Club, one of Western Sydney’s most accessible championship golf courses, thus setting the scene to create a great event reflecting our well renowned and now very traditional Gunner friendliness and camaraderie. Play progressed smoothly with all enjoying the afternoons sport. Ultimately, finally arriving back at the clubhouse, the warmth and unison quickly consumed the room after the physical side of the day was complete and it remained second to none with many comments from both players and sponsors alike. All sponsors again departing saying that they would be back next year.
This was the fifth year that the RAA Association Shield was competed for by all Defence personnel, as well as Defence member organisations. A key purpose of the event is to raise funds for Legacy NSW to help meet the regrettable increasing demand for support from the families of those who have served. This year saw a total of $4,400 contributed to Legacy by our players and sponsors bringing the total to date to almost $35,000. A great effort by all involved. Particular thanks are given to Sigvaris who donated compression socks to all players plus a Health Seminar valued at $1,800 to the winning corporate team. Bank of Queensland for sponsoring a hole, Perpetual for sponsoring a hole, Blacktown Business Chamber for sponsoring a hole and finally Henry Williams Lawyers for sponsoring the drinks cart.
A huge vote of thanks goes to Angela Corbett, Charyn Bello, Mae Encalladoand July Arguijo, for organising and running the day. It ran so smoothly, they can stand justly proud of their efforts.
Winners on the day were Fairfield RSL Sub Branch for the RAA (NSW) Shield and Perpetual for the Condon Associates Group Trophy. We certainly congratulate them on their achievements; but we must acknowledge that general consensus was that all who played were in fact winners having had such a wonderful day in what must be described as perfect conditions.
The details for next year’s event, when the new "owners" of the Shield and Trophy will be challenged, will be advised on the Associations website and in Gunfire in 2019.
